Something special to wine about…in New York Wine Country
If you can’t take a ride in a Hot Air Balloon over Napa Valley, then the next best thing is a drive through the North Fork of Long Island. Most everyone who enjoys sipping wine is familiar with the wines from California, but what many are not aware, is that Washington State comes in second! New York may be a distant 3rd on the list but is not to be ignored for, beautiful vineyards, and award-winning vintage.
The North fork wine country is a winding verdant picturesque drive, not far from New York City. On a cool late spring day, the calming scenic views are hard to rival. The North Fork is a singular sort of place. With its sandy, glacial soils and maritime climate, the North Fork lends itself to fresh, invigorating wines. Heading out even further along the Island are the most popular wineries on the North Fork such as – Pindar Vinyards.
Upon arrival take a few moments to enjoy the vast lush greenery, and breath in the hardy aroma of moist rich soil and sun kissed leaves. The heady country atmosphere blends into the rolling beauty of the fanning vines in an intoxicating vista to rival the wine yet to be tasted.
It’s definitely time to find the tasting selections! Making the right choice can take more than one tasting or two! Sipping delicious wine while enjoying the scenic views is a delight that can melt city stress away. It’s an ideal location for taking photos and etching lasting memories. After savoring the wine and the idyllic view it’s time to be off to the next stop on an adventure.
Back on the highway, tall leafy trees line the winding road through fertile farmland for miles. Fewer cars remain ahead towards the Shelter Island ferry terminal. Boarding the Shelter Island Car Ferry and being up front offers an unobstructed view of the Peconic Bay dotted with small fishing boats bobbing on the waves.
The car Ferry

The 15-minute cruise to Shelter Island disembarks into a verdant interior, where a forest lined road leads to a second ferry back to the mainland docking in Sag Harbor.
Sag Harbor lies on the South Fork of Long Island and is just a short drive to Easthampton from the ferry. The tiny town of east Hampton is an elegant hamlet with quaint bright white siding shops that beckon travelers to stop and sample tasty treats before continuing on Route 27 to the town of Southampton.
First time travelers to Southampton will find much to do and admire. The bright plentiful window shopping on Main Street offers artisan and hand-crafted wares to temp any collector. The town boasts many art galleries and is known in hosting large art fairs during the summer season. The restaurants hail with aromas wafting from culinary kitchens and offer a delish respite before heading back toward highways and home.
If considering a way to get out of the house with family or a small group friends and don’t have a car, then a personal wine tour of the North Fork of Long Island or the Hudson Valley, has several options and suggestions offered on line.
One option to consider might be New York Wine Events. Open to groups of two to 12.
This tour hits the road from Manhattan with private tours and tastings at two wineries as well as a stop at a farm stand. Transportation is provided, and lunch is optional. Health protocols are observed, and the excursion lasts about nine hours.
